Monday. After Lunch.

We meet at a Co-Working space this morning, located in the old Dorćol district.

We are surrounded of historic architecture, trendy cafes and cocktailbars, listening to presentations about the works and ideas for the future of Belgrade.

Shortly after, we have a picknick in the park of the nearby Kalemegdan Fortress, talking about the different local perception of public parks, ArtificaI Intelligence and the coming about of ChatGPT.

Strolling through the park, we have a quick look into the Ružica Church and its chapel, standing within the fortress.

The pace is slowing down.

The chats turn silent.

The air becomes thick.

walking in, the walls paint our fingers black with past light of burnt down candles.

Tuesday morning.

Nikola, our friend, local guide and architect of MADA Architecture Studio, takes us on a bike tour through the city of Belgrade, capital of Serbia.

Starting our tour at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, we are quickly introduced to a prominent feature of Belgrade's river culture: The large number of boat houses, locally known as "splavovi" (singular:"splav").

The tradition of boat houses in Belgrade dates back several decades, with the first splavovi appearing in the mid-20th century.

Initially, they were mostly used as private leisure spaces by affluent individuals for private gatherings. Over time, the concept evolved, and boat houses became popular social destinations, offering a mix of restaurants, bars, clubs, and live music venues.

Wednesday afternoon.

During a day-long bicycle tour through the City of Belgrade, we drive by the „Zgrada Zepter“. Presenting itself in twilight hour.

Designed by the architect Mihajlo Mitrovic, it stands as probably the most renowned building on our seminar week’s schedule.

The name "Zepter" is associated with the distinctive lettering of the swiss company for high quality consumer goods, particularly areas of home appliances, cookware, etc. In the case of the Zepter company, the word "Zepter" itself refers to a scepter, which is a symbolic ceremonial staff or rod often associated with royalty or authority. The scepter represents power, sovereignty, and leadership.

Upon entering the building’s inhabited side, we laugh while passing by the mailboxes that are covered in a multitude of posters depicting Novak Djokovic.

Thursday. Noon.

Before taking the coach towards Serbia’s more rural areas, we visit Belgrade’s Faculty of Architecture.

They are inmidst of their final reviews and we are very welcome to join the discussions. After architectural debates, we meet the local students in the hallway. They open, first a pack of cigarets, second, the tall windows facing the courtyard. We accept the invitation.

It was only after, when we learn from the smirking professors, that its prohibited to smoke in the University’s building: „but yes of course in Serbia you still smoke cigarettes everywhere“.

Friday. Morning.

After a fantastic birthday night under the Stars of Novi Sad’s periphery, the waiters await us laughing in awe for breakfast, our driver laughing the loudest.

As always across the three days with us, he is in good spirits. The only english i remember of him is, when he proudly bragged about the fact, that this very bus, was a former Vfb Stuttgart Team Bus.

During our stops he mostly stays in his seat or moves around the bus speaking Serbian on the phone. Only later, a native speaking colleague translates to me, that he is constantly swearing and making jokes on the phone about, driving us to the weirdest places. „From a National Park, to some random restaurant in nomansland to a dead end in wasteland, only to meet a bird watcher sitting on a bench.“
